Ants are attracted towards  sugary secretion (honeydew) of mealy bugs which help in spreading of mealy bug and provide protection from predator ladybird beetle, parasites and other natural enemies. Ants also keep their colony clean from detritus that accumulate in the secreted honeydew, which may be harmful to the colony.
