Management

  • Plough deeply, clean cultivation to expose the resting pupae, crop rotation and  avoidance of ratooning reduce pest population.

  • Use tolerant/resistant varieties

  • In case of pigeonpea grow coriander/linseed as trap crop.

  • Fix 3 feet sticks in the field @ 10/ha as bird perches to attract predatory birds.

  • Fix Helicoverpa pheromone traps @ 2-5/ha.

  • Broadcast leftover cooked rice in the field to attract birds.

  • Physical shaking of plants to dislodge the larvae in case of pigeonpea helps in reduction of  the population load.

  • Spray of  NSKE (Neem Seed Kernal Extract) 5% if population exceeds above ETL level.

  • Need based spray of insecticides effective against the pest including endosulfan and other fast degrading pesticides.
