Pod sucking bugs  (Anoplocnemis sp., Riptortus sp., Clavigralla gibbosa)

Identification

 

 

The adults of Anoplocnemis are usually black or brown, are the largest (30 mm) of these bugs. Riptortus spp (18 mm)  are mainly brown and are smaller. Clavigralla bugs are brown-grey. These bugs lay their eggs in clumps on the leaf and pod surfaces. Nymphs and adults of these bugs suck the liquid from the developing seeds by piercing mouth parts. Damaged seeds become shriveled and develop dark patches.  

 

Management  

 

  • Deep summer ploughing,  and clean cultivation.

  • Use of pest resistant varieties helps efficiently in managing pod sucking bugs.

  • Need based application of insecticides those with systemic action such as dimethoate and monocrotophos helps in managing the pest.
